Like an acient oak, underwhich the cows, sheep, pigs, and deer have foraged for centuries. Hollowed by rot, damaged by great storms long past, and still full in canopy, reitterated in its full and unimpeded form, again and again after each apparent setback. As the old saying runs: 300 years in the growing, 300 years in the living, 300 years in the dying.</p><p>Looking at its best yet after full defoliation earlier this summer. </p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9L8b3aDTCeuQo62TVS1UO5U1fXuNDzKPzOV-oUHt3ImTKDtrK473UlPj4kClz3pFfwiW2XIrX9bWJhIbFnS87xaoqgfxKW3V5Z1kGsOxDvn7EM4u6lcIeBA5g02BMihpi7B5YfikMiNvyaWCJL4aySUJ29I0_FDZOxYkW_SPsJNZlcJ2UqSV91fRLNg/s2470/PXL_20220727_075936641-01.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2470" data-original-width="2470" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9L8b3aDTCeuQo62TVS1UO5U1fXuNDzKPzOV-oUHt3ImTKDtrK473UlPj4kClz3pFfwiW2XIrX9bWJhIbFnS87xaoqgfxKW3V5Z1kGsOxDvn7EM4u6lcIeBA5g02BMihpi7B5YfikMiNvyaWCJL4aySUJ29I0_FDZOxYkW_SPsJNZlcJ2UqSV91fRLNg/w640-h640/PXL_20220727_075936641-01.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Matt Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16487868067285973728noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-76033937421369435.post-77303593389846420652022-06-09T11:57:00.001+01:002022-06-09T11:57:14.412+01:00Field Maple Bonsai Forest Planting Progression<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy1f4wtWs98-HbIWJZh0K2hJ23vQ7XqAQBkKhKfebjSv1Gzt0QzaA9URtDY9DRO1UJgCSamOEspT8z1WQLgd4mWbEas3B-4vNCQYbrMRopUa53dLuZiWUYEPe53NFy6ZNQ5WQzIISzGXDixoy68vgWLJ9eCNm4a7ZFVxyRgerIsS8bNeJiSH6ihHYa7Q/s3314/original_532be0ce-4a5e-4f49-ad2b-bed0a1df0572_PXL_20220516_132736673.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2683" data-original-width="3314" height="324" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy1f4wtWs98-HbIWJZh0K2hJ23vQ7XqAQBkKhKfebjSv1Gzt0QzaA9URtDY9DRO1UJgCSamOEspT8z1WQLgd4mWbEas3B-4vNCQYbrMRopUa53dLuZiWUYEPe53NFy6ZNQ5WQzIISzGXDixoy68vgWLJ9eCNm4a7ZFVxyRgerIsS8bNeJiSH6ihHYa7Q/w400-h324/original_532be0ce-4a5e-4f49-ad2b-bed0a1df0572_PXL_20220516_132736673.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX8eqDIKp9g93FrV7kBU48VtdN7s2kxvEtdqecCITqe3Khm7yu4ftSr5x-txsyV_GUcKScfabOfbjrjoOqLH4d-siohQtfmQdavNcTHEYcGLMd91cDj6JTOjr6phrm2VPwJ_TGIBjsm0O3nK3Ifzwug1UUfDmaRf-GliOJPrJ-h44-FtzSpf0LhOOExg/s4032/PXL_20220516_133425886.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjX8eqDIKp9g93FrV7kBU48VtdN7s2kxvEtdqecCITqe3Khm7yu4ftSr5x-txsyV_GUcKScfabOfbjrjoOqLH4d-siohQtfmQdavNcTHEYcGLMd91cDj6JTOjr6phrm2VPwJ_TGIBjsm0O3nK3Ifzwug1UUfDmaRf-GliOJPrJ-h44-FtzSpf0LhOOExg/s320/PXL_20220516_133425886.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p>This forest planting was begun in 2012 from pencil thin, bareroot <i>Acer campestre</i> hedging stock, sold as a discounted bundle for £5 at a general garden and hardware store. It is an <i>Acer palmatum '</i>shishigashira<i>' , </i>several wonderful bonsai specimens of which I had seen on my then recent trip to Japan. When I spotted it at a local nursery, in late 2018, I thought it had good potential for bonsai; it's probably 20 years old or so, with some good taper and movement, and is not grafted. The nursery staff seemed quite surprised that we wanted to buy it, as it was the centrepiece of their Japanese maple display and the most expensive plant in the nursery... I'm lucky to have a sympathetic and munificent wife!</p><p>Unfortunately I don't have any photos as it came to me, so I'll share an image of one of the fine shishigashira bonsai from <a href="https://www.bonsai-art-museum.jp/en/collection/a-045/" target="_blank">Omiya Bonsai Art Museum, Saitama</a> (image courtesy of that institution). The autumn colour of the crenulated leaves gives rise to this tree's cultivar name, which means 'lions head'. Of course, my lowly specimen is around 100 years younger than this masterpiece!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT8rWQfc4HBkr8MFaDByMhRxWhUmx0AJm9wW4znqVDxgqZfqOTbC6VD87bxmsGRAOdE95hUiFvCGrUuMuBXiLiWj7LpHKr9jJaTtuEQ7kC6s4_OKUDsdEUqyLHpYhl1GULbuyqH5Yrc8HQ/s960/maple_1024x1024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="785" data-original-width="960" height="328" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT8rWQfc4HBkr8MFaDByMhRxWhUmx0AJm9wW4znqVDxgqZfqOTbC6VD87bxmsGRAOdE95hUiFvCGrUuMuBXiLiWj7LpHKr9jJaTtuEQ7kC6s4_OKUDsdEUqyLHpYhl1GULbuyqH5Yrc8HQ/w400-h328/maple_1024x1024.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p>My plan for the tree was to air-layer several smaller trees from the upper branches, concurrent with using wedge cuts to perform staged removal of some very big branches. The wedge cut technique was innovated by Mr Ebihara, a Japanese master of deciduous techniques. In essence, the branch to be removed is half cut through, preventing die back down the trunk, and supporting callusing of the large wound on the desired trunk line. There's a nicely illustrated post on <a href="https://moonlightbonsai.wordpress.com/2018/03/05/japanese-maples-and-healing-large-wounds/" target="_blank">Kaya Mooney's blog here which features the technique</a>.</p><p>In February 2020 I reduced the root-ball by half and removed all the field growing soil, replacing it with a coarse mixture of moler clay, pumice, and pine bark (5:3:2).</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; They had plenty of good roots and have put on tremendous growth, which has been cut back twice already. Confident in their vigor I've given them a first styling. They've got good genetics for bonsai, but need age and maturity that will take decades to acrue. I'll let them grow freely for the next year and repot in 2022, the wire will come off before it starts to bite in, perhaps in April or May.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxUBHIddlqtCahkP9h3o7LlfDKo4-C3NCeIm_d4GaMPTEwO-kXUH-tUEQBASOwRFBrTNjruTE6wBdX6nZQR-r_scp7IGO-FsS0_8XGHzRFeH0Y9k_vMTNLQNXnkSj6bze_iWIgorMKrFkz/s3906/Prunus+cerasifera+1+Nov+2020-01.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3906" data-original-width="3906" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxUBHIddlqtCahkP9h3o7LlfDKo4-C3NCeIm_d4GaMPTEwO-kXUH-tUEQBASOwRFBrTNjruTE6wBdX6nZQR-r_scp7IGO-FsS0_8XGHzRFeH0Y9k_vMTNLQNXnkSj6bze_iWIgorMKrFkz/w400-h400/Prunus+cerasifera+1+Nov+2020-01.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbYB0bGoGjdIju9wRRiNTNz5Gd3uQuXAF45sh_c0lrw1uMqsyGxqSQ896EugW3aQm3iMrH4mpQsVDWKwo-lc7w5bm_58k1tYpBU4sCNABhXZ6ENE6BmtozRIBVOc2eBaUu4-M4JjsyOQCu/s3798/Prunus+cerasifera+2+%25281%2529+Nov+2020-01.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3797" data-original-width="3798" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbYB0bGoGjdIju9wRRiNTNz5Gd3uQuXAF45sh_c0lrw1uMqsyGxqSQ896EugW3aQm3iMrH4mpQsVDWKwo-lc7w5bm_58k1tYpBU4sCNABhXZ6ENE6BmtozRIBVOc2eBaUu4-M4JjsyOQCu/w400-h400/Prunus+cerasifera+2+%25281%2529+Nov+2020-01.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Matt Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16487868067285973728noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-76033937421369435.post-24297583372728475742020-11-25T18:10:00.002+00:002020-11-25T18:10:16.348+00:00Field or Hedge Maple Bonsai in Winter<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3CxP2lyaDoB3ZsvQXL2eEUOsiVtAmzhteOTmMZf_9kJvJVlnjYazhgMSbPflmEm6LczIZ7DRB5KR6A8BG7rG2K8DuDqzOKQ8i57PEyPmHkCQ3jriWZ0Bxu0ip_EXVo-a-Icq7ERfItYmc/s2048/November+2020+%25283%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1754" data-original-width="2048" height="343" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi3CxP2lyaDoB3ZsvQXL2eEUOsiVtAmzhteOTmMZf_9kJvJVlnjYazhgMSbPflmEm6LczIZ7DRB5KR6A8BG7rG2K8DuDqzOKQ8i57PEyPmHkCQ3jriWZ0Bxu0ip_EXVo-a-Icq7ERfItYmc/w400-h343/November+2020+%25283%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p>Though this <i>Acer campestre</i> had a health knockback earlier this year, a combination of pest attack, secondary fungus, and poor horticulture on my part, it responded well to a full defoliation and now seems in great health. Peter Warren (<a href="https://saruyama.co.uk/">Saruyama Bonsai</a>), who pointed this out when he worked with me recently, suggested I move the planting position somewhat to the right of the pot, a job for spring. I've made some edits to the tree in response to Peter's suggestions and need to build some volume in the upper left canopy. For now, I'll just enjoy the winter image.<p></p>Matt Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16487868067285973728noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-76033937421369435.post-35935214628209755152020-11-06T16:31:00.003+00:002020-11-06T16:31:52.144+00:00Privet bonsai in autumn<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw6Rg9WMNKUivUl-1ABRlvAmYqo_BCHuMQ97P4YuHhcU1XkZecXzH9po0fry6PhPn6j50ntBOuxFhTc1_f106iLf8boDF149QeOdU7J9ohSoM6VBywU77xXigzD38SKmQrHCK-8KJHDytS/s4006/Ligustrum+ovalifolium+2020+Oct+%25281%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3918" data-original-width="4006" height="391" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhw6Rg9WMNKUivUl-1ABRlvAmYqo_BCHuMQ97P4YuHhcU1XkZecXzH9po0fry6PhPn6j50ntBOuxFhTc1_f106iLf8boDF149QeOdU7J9ohSoM6VBywU77xXigzD38SKmQrHCK-8KJHDytS/w400-h391/Ligustrum+ovalifolium+2020+Oct+%25281%2529.JPG" width="400" /></a></div><i><br /></i><p></p><p><i>Ligustrum ovalifolium</i> are semi-deciduous in the UK climate, at this time of year the leaves become deeply bronzed, but only on the upper surface. its really rather beautiful, but doesn't show up in tree portraits well due to the upward facing leaves.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzTrKTGRkyhj_wSdO_s1heV0mqU_N4eMffHaXH6nUniT6iuSrEoONbVJ9f8ZjGNtHSe65t8PhWCroOhFihfTgnB11DLqx7uxI0qAbVCrjg3rC7MeF5zd5FPOodnuwbxh0_YjbIALmiJqGq/s2048/PXL_20201106_161957340.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzTrKTGRkyhj_wSdO_s1heV0mqU_N4eMffHaXH6nUniT6iuSrEoONbVJ9f8ZjGNtHSe65t8PhWCroOhFihfTgnB11DLqx7uxI0qAbVCrjg3rC7MeF5zd5FPOodnuwbxh0_YjbIALmiJqGq/s320/PXL_20201106_161957340.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrRMjJB8OmqGz3Xbb9emOcNZ35WUTnHLCcAZYdfgjJ4IkwnqSJ2IxWKmEB-lxuNfAo3h07AKYevUqb7aX0-0ranQgSTEyiq_ht7byvOgAtJxoaQZbMUMl2trO93glrgTdwa0vnk6NSm4fW/s3964/Ligustrum+ovalifolium+2020+Oct+%25282%2529.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3964" data-original-width="3941" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjrRMjJB8OmqGz3Xbb9emOcNZ35WUTnHLCcAZYdfgjJ4IkwnqSJ2IxWKmEB-lxuNfAo3h07AKYevUqb7aX0-0ranQgSTEyiq_ht7byvOgAtJxoaQZbMUMl2trO93glrgTdwa0vnk6NSm4fW/w398-h400/Ligustrum+ovalifolium+2020+Oct+%25282%2529.JPG" width="398" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Matt Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16487868067285973728noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-76033937421369435.post-38337193819911607272020-10-31T10:01:00.002+00:002020-10-31T10:06:21.962+00:00Turkey Oak bonsai in Winter<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidkj2CYiBns2vZy5BXbCQVwWeimgagp2D89W05xxv2B23isPd8h6TFTeC-gtFYxQIgJE862OWxfmhy53pJfQLlFUWv0EIqKrA5Md8R66LH6zrqHiIkqZMF3gbCS2yxtBQz1BEozQDJbdEb/s4000/Quercus+cerris+2020+Oct+%25281%2529-1.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4000" data-original-width="3883" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidkj2CYiBns2vZy5BXbCQVwWeimgagp2D89W05xxv2B23isPd8h6TFTeC-gtFYxQIgJE862OWxfmhy53pJfQLlFUWv0EIqKrA5Md8R66LH6zrqHiIkqZMF3gbCS2yxtBQz1BEozQDJbdEb/w389-h400/Quercus+cerris+2020+Oct+%25281%2529-1.JPG" width="389" /></a></div><br /><p>I'm excited to strip the browned leaves from this tree every year, and see the results of the years growth management. It has so much seasonal interest: early to leaf out, glossy green leaves rimmed red as they emerge, delicate pink bud like flowers much beloved by bees, bright red fruit, vivid crimson to purple autumn foliage, and fine, closely ramified twigging in winter.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfHQhyN90m0GFvCj73e8cetnUoMWxox7D1bNo8ksSEp0se1Xds_pmGgFlSElMxZp88Gk4COPmMl57dvQpFZ2kAsazkVwGs6kzcumo55QNOt_mnHUFHElSSO_9HaWs7dI_yX5iPT-V_Dec0/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2510" data-original-width="3356" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfHQhyN90m0GFvCj73e8cetnUoMWxox7D1bNo8ksSEp0se1Xds_pmGgFlSElMxZp88Gk4COPmMl57dvQpFZ2kAsazkVwGs6kzcumo55QNOt_mnHUFHElSSO_9HaWs7dI_yX5iPT-V_Dec0/s320/DSC_3209-01.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv1OuI9XEqZ7Wn2DVKYdxU5ahBxF_vTQROGX10uZ52JDuYkd7rUSZUWp045UDPDg8ZaeJMbriDXfjHuOA_yC5Wi3b30bMVPZ2k_t4ympGmP_v7RZQKkl0xil6lbxFlpMh0bBJ-ktNcXMph/" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2514" data-original-width="3357" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgv1OuI9XEqZ7Wn2DVKYdxU5ahBxF_vTQROGX10uZ52JDuYkd7rUSZUWp045UDPDg8ZaeJMbriDXfjHuOA_yC5Wi3b30bMVPZ2k_t4ympGmP_v7RZQKkl0xil6lbxFlpMh0bBJ-ktNcXMph/s320/DSC_3210-02.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>It's a tree with a storyline too, which you can read <a href="http://silvanaturalis.blogspot.com/2020/03/shohin-root-over-rock-with-story.html?m=1">here</a>.</div>Matt Williamshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16487868067285973728noreply@blogger.com0
